Watch our film clip on creating a new variety of marigold.
One of our varieties of marigolds planted here in Byron Bay Australia has thrown some striped bright yellow flowers amongst the darker ones.
We tag the lighter flowers that we would like to reproduce for next planting. When the flowers dry on the bush, the seeds are ready for harvest. They all end up as the same brownish colour which is why we tag them with a red ribbon.
Dry the seeds and store them in a paper bag for next planting with the date and what they are ‘Light Yellow Selection’, in this case.
Plant again the light yellow ones and select again next year for the light ones so you will end up with a brighter variety.
All the best and let us know when you have done it.
