Seed Savers Gardens

Photo taken in 1999, 3 years after we arrived. Thousands more food  plants now live in the gardens.

Intro to Organic Seed Gardens Suite

It is now possible to stay at Seed Savers. From three days to  one month or more by arrangement you may stay in an artistically renovated garden apartment that is within Jude and Michel Fantons’ residence, and it is all soundproofed with a private entrance. The couple host the organisation for the last 28 years. The renting of the apartment helps to run the show. The seed gardens are a popular destination: up to 2000 people visited a few years ago in just one weekend.

The Pad

Apartment with private access, it is a one bedrooms with a double bed, the other room with your private office/art room, library to your disposal,  a bright French country-style kitchen. Colourful toilet and a bathroom with portuguese hand painted tiles, a deep bath and a shower.
We have made non-toxic choices when renovating, such as Marmoleum floor coverings (linseed oil, clay, pine flour and jute). Wall paint in the bedrooms is made from milk casein, marble flour and natural pigments. The kitchen is decorated with citrus oil paint. Hot water is from solar power, though there is an electric booster.
Views are over the vegetable and spice gardens and a food forest.

The rest of the house which are the Fanton’s residence and the apartment,  will be available for renting from around Easter 2015 to later that year. Possibly September but it is flexible as we will be on a seed solidarity tour. The apartment would be included so it would be the total house for rent. It may be suitable for a professional couple, someone wishing to test the ecological lifestyle but want to live a few minutes from Byron CBD and close to a wild beach.

The Panorama

The one acre gardens are a refreshing oasis from busy Byron Bay (10 000 habitants), shady, cool and green in summer with ocean breezes but naturally warm in winter. You are in a garden paradise with deep views into bushland across a disused railway line. The garden has over one thousand useful plants, including vegetables, fruit and nut trees, spices, fibre and timber trees. Designed in 1998 on Permaculture principles, the property has many elements that enhance life in the dwelling, such as judicious plantings to increase ventilation in summer and heat in winter.

The Geography

Our latitude is 28.3°S. Tallow Creek mouth is only a short walk via a small coastal heathland track through Arakwal National Park with a range of migrating birds. Byron Bay town centre and main beach is literally 2km down the road, a five minutes ride by bicycle.

The Hosts

We, Michel and Jude Fanton are passionate gardeners. We travel overseas each year and have done so practically all our lives, so we know about accommodation pitfalls and how much we appreciate comfortable, clean and beautiful surroundings at the end of a long journey.

The Experience

If you visit for a few hours with a tour, Michel and Jude will take you on garden tours, and for harvesting the garden. At other times herbs and spices are available from the garden for your use.

The Money

Proceeds go towards our Seed Solidarity Tours each year where we encourage and support seed networks in other countries.
